Jupiter in Scorpio and Relationships
Jupiter moves into Scorpio on October 10th, 2017, beginning a yearlong stay (until November 8, 2018) in the sign that we associate with the process of decay and regeneration. Jupiter is by nature outgoing and expansive, while the sign of the scorpion is more cautious and reserved. So how will these two energies blend together and how will Jupiter in Scorpio affect our relationships?
One thing that will be apparent is a greater drive towards intimacy than we’ve seen in recent years. In Libra, Jupiter was more concerned with the formal aspects of relationship, and maintaining a gracious and harmonious appearance in our partnerships. By contrast, in Scorpio the external veneer and formal aspects of relationship are ignored in favor of a search for a strong, soul-level connection. Jupiter gives us the courage to take a leap of faith, and in Scorpio that faith is directed towards intimate connections with others. We may be more willing to go deeper and connect more intensely.
Part of that intimate connection is sexuality. With Jupiter in Scorpio, we may be willing to take more risks in our sex lives. While for some, this could literally spell “risky sex” (such as not protecting against STDs or pregnancy, or connecting with unsavory people), most of us will simply be more flexible in terms of sexuality. That could mean adventures into areas that are otherwise taboo, and I’ll let the somewhat dark, goth vibe of Scorpio suggest avenues to each of you.
Yet at the core of our increased interest in sexuality is our quest for emotional intimacy. By sharing sexual fantasies, for example, we open up to our partners and let them know something about ourselves we might otherwise keep hidden. Many sexual fantasies reflect our deepest emotional conflicts and struggles, as well as our highest aspirations – opening these to another takes courage and a faith that we will be treated gently (even if the activity is less than gentle) and with compassion – that is, with love.
We don’t necessarily need to go into the kinkier spaces of sexuality with Jupiter in Scorpio, though. We may simply find that we are more sexual, more inclined towards the ecstasy of sex and the intimacy that it creates. While we don’t want to confuse sex with love, we may recognize that if we bring an openness to our sex lives we may succeed in deepening our emotional connections as well.
Scorpio is associated with the eight house of the horoscope, the house of birth, sex, and death, as it’s often called. It’s the place where our conscious lives – our thoughts and emotions – connect with the physical body. When giving birth, having sex, or dying, we certainly find that our consciousness is directly tied to physical experience. We cannot wander off into distractions during the contractions of labor – or orgasm – or when the soul prepares to leave the body.
It could be that some of us are more inclined towards having children with Jupiter in Scorpio, too. While the increased emphasis on sex might mainly affect our more immediate desire for intimate connection, Scorpio is a sign of regeneration. The idea of creating life out of our sexual surrender (le petit mort of orgasm?) may be very appealing.
On the darker side of things, Scorpio is a sign that keeps secrets, and some of us may be more inclined towards behaviors we’d like to keep hidden. Yet Scorpio ultimately tends to expose what was undercover, and Jupiter gives us an optimistic approach, so we could find that we’re actually more likely to open up and share our otherwise hidden selves and our secrets more readily. A Jovial faith that we can do so without unhappy consequence could lead to a more open and tolerant atmosphere, where fewer things are taboo.
Over the next year, watch your own approach to intimacy, sexuality, and secrets. See how the energy of Jupiter in Scorpio plays out for you, and your relationships.
