Navigating the Eye of the Storm
Relationships are such an intrinsic part of our human existence that we often take them for granted. We assume that they will continue, often with minimum care and attention, regardless of how much pressure they are under. When we choose as a collective to manifest powerful planetary configurations via chaos and strife, the pressure inevitably trickles down to all our relationships, be it intimate relationships, friendships, family, work relationships…
Since 2010 the planetary energies shifted gears into a sustained and powerful process of major transformation. On a personal and collective level we had choices as to how to manifest these energies. We are now in the midst of dealing with the results of the choices we made and continue to make on a daily basis.
Globally we are dealing with a large number of natural disasters as well as wars, famines and the displacement of an unprecedented number of people. Every day we are challenged to assimilate horrors to humanity that are almost impossible for our hearts to even begin to compute. The pressure on our relationships is enormous right now, as we struggle to make sense of and find our individual role in the general chaos.
So what are some of the things we can do to nurture and protect our precious relationships during these times?
1. Engage with Saturn in our chart – create some boundaried time with our loved ones. If we are out on a date, do we really need to let all our f/b friends know and join in!
2. Use earth planets or earth houses in our chart to ground ourselves in our body, in this moment in time. If we have planned a fun time with friends, what can we do to be fully present right now?
3. Know what comforts our Moon and create a personal tool kit of emotional resources to use when needed. This avoids co-dependency and making a lot of ongoing emotional demands on close relationships.
4. Empower our Venus so that our self-value feels strong in the face of rejection. The stronger our Venus, the quicker we can bounce back and not take things personally when our loved ones are unable to connect with us for reasons of their own.
5. Connect with our Mars through physical exercise to release pent up frustrations that may otherwise end up being taken out in our relationships. The healthier our Mars is, the easier it is to recognize what the true origin of our anger is about and to find functional ways to release it.
6. Connect with our Jupiter to access joy – even amidst all the challenges around us. Unless we connect with feelings of joy within us, it becomes almost impossible to feel joy in any relationship. Yet relationships need moments of joy and happiness to create a memory bank when times are challenging. Laughter is a great way to connect with Jupiter.
7. Connect with our Sun and Pluto to stand in our power and prune away connections that are toxic, rather than loving. From a place of consciousness it becomes easier to ascertain if a relationship is just going through a very challenging time and needs some external help, or if it is fundamentally flawed. One of the ways to figure this out in intimate relationships, is for both individuals to do their own internal emotional work on early life, family of origin etc. Although this is of course a life time process, once we each embark on it, it becomes easier to recognize our patterns and to do our best not to project them onto our loved ones. If the core issues persist in spite of both individuals doing personal work on themselves, then it may be time to end the relationship in as clean and clear a manner as possible.
8. Recognize the need for external support systems for all our relationships. This includes a circle of trusted nonjudgmental friends whom we can talk to about our intimate relationships, as well as friendships, family and work relationships. Good supervision cum mentoring in our work environment, can make a huge difference, particularly when it comes from an external source. Some form of counselling or psychotherapy is hugely helpful for all our relationships. Ultimately, dysfunctional relationship patterns can only be fully worked through in a relationship. The relationship with a counselor or psychotherapist creates a safe contained space to deal with our fears, anxieties, frustrations and resentments, thereby taking a huge amount of pressure off all our relationships.
None of these are a panacea for what is going on in the world at the moment. Nor do I intend to underestimate the brutal and horrific circumstances that millions of people find themselves in right now, through no fault of their own. These are merely some suggestions that might alleviate some of the pressure on relationships right now. MG Sept 2017
